What is the Regional Growth Strategy?

Adopted by all the region's councils in 1999, the Regional Growth Strategy (RGS) sets a vision for how the region can manage growth sustainably for the next 50 years. It aims to improve livability, protect the environment and get the right infrastructure in place. It was developed by the Regional Growth Forum.

It was the first strategy of its kind in New Zealand, involved a major collaborative effort and partnership across the Auckland region, and has been used as a model elsewhere. The development of the RGS involved research, analysis, evaluation of options, extensive stakeholder and public consultation over 3 years.

In 2007 the first full progress appraisal of the Regional Growth Strategy was completed. The evaluation, entitled Growing Smarter examines implementation progress since 1999 and the challenges ahead.

What is the Auckland Sustainability Framework?

Looking out 100-years, the Auckland Sustainability Framework (ASF) identifies eight interrelated and long term goals to enable Auckland to take a sustainable development approach in the face of climate change, globalisation, population pressures, social disadvantage and natural resource limits. A quality compact urban form is a key goal that reinforces the importance of a more concerted and sophisticated approach to implementing Auckland's Regional Growth Strategy.

What is the Regional Land Transport Strategy?

An estimated $11 billion of funding is available for the region's transport during the next 10 years. The Auckland Regional Land Transport Strategy (RLTS) recommends how this money should be invested.

What is the Auckland Regional Economic Development Strategy?

The Auckland Regional Economic Development Strategy (AREDS) provides the
framework and vision for the Auckland region to be an "internationally competitive, inclusive and dynamic economy". AucklandPlus, the official investment agency for the Auckland region, has taken on a key role in the implementation of the Metro Action Plan.
