Guest Speaker on Regional Growth and Urban Design - Paul Burton
8 July 2004
Paul Burton
Paul Burton has been carrying out research for central and local government, charities and international bodies for over twenty years, on many aspects of public policy. Most recently this has focused on the modernisation of local government and on public participation in policy making. Paul also conducts evaluation research, usually on the impact of community-based approaches to policy making and local service delivery.
Academically, Paul is interested in theories of policy making and in processes of political modernisation and democratisation, also in the theory and practice of policy evaluation. Paul has recently spent a year in New Zealand, enabling him to comment on differences in local government structures, for example the size of councils, directly elected mayors, and the absence of partisan electoral politics.
Details of Visit
Paul was in NZ on a study tour from a university in the UK. The Auckland Regional Council invited him to speak on the general subject of techniques for local government consultation. Presented for about one hour to a small group of local government councillors and officers. About 25 in attendance.
