Save the drain for rain
Wash your vehicle on the grass
Every year, Aucklanders let half a million litres of detergent run into our harbours and streams just from washing vehicles on driveways, roads and other hard surfaces. This detergent kills the marine life in our waterways and pollutes the beaches and harbours that we love.
Wash your vehicle on the grass
You can help by washing your vehicle on the grass. Use a bucket and small amounts of detergent. Tip any left over dirty water in the bucket over your grass, garden or down an inside sink.
If you see someone washing their car and allowing detergent onto the road, give them this information brochure.
Take your vehicle to a car wash
If you take your vehicle to a BP car wash, water recyclers capture, clean and recycle up to 90% of the wash water. The final rinse is completed with fresh water.
