Travel smart
If you have to drive
When you have to drive, these simple tips can help reduce air pollution and save fuel:
- drive smoothly - rapid acceleration causes more air pollution and uses more fuel
- change gears early but don't labour the engine
- if you drive an automatic car, choose 'economy' gear switching
- keeping your speed constant uses less fuel than accelerating and braking all the time
- avoid peak hour and stop-start traffic. Listen to traffic reports so you can avoid congestion and road works. You can view real time traffic reports on the Transit New Zealand website
- don't speed. By travelling at 100km/h instead of 110km/h you can cut around 13% off your fuel bill.
