Turn it off
Save electricity
There are a number of simple things you can do throughout the home to save power and money. These include:
- switch off lights when you leave a room - you'll save around $50 a year
- make sure the thermostat on your hot water cylinder is not set too high (around 60 degrees is ok). If you have an older home, insulate your ceiling and hot water cylinder. You could save hundreds of dollars in just a few years
- only heat the room you are in and shut doors to colder parts of the house
- use draft stoppers under doors (you can buy them or a rolled up towel will do)
- close the curtains at night
- put lamps on a timer so they turn off automatically
- turn off heated towel rails once your towels are dry - this could save around $60 per year
- cover pots with a lid when cooking
- use the microwave instead of heating up the conventional oven
- cook more than one dish in the oven to make the most of heating it up
- unplug chargers, turn off computers, screens and printers, and turn off your video and TV at the wall when not in use.
