New Auckland Council

Government's legislative programme

From 1 November 2010 the eight councils in the Auckland region, including the Auckland Regional Council, will have been reorganised into one governing body, the new Auckland Council.

The Government is now undertaking a three-stage legislative programme to give effect to its decisions on Auckland's governance.

The three pieces of legislation are:

  1. the Local Government (Tamaki Makaurau Reorganisation) Act 2009 - passed under urgency in May 2009
  2. the Local Government (Auckland Council) Act 2009 - passed in September 2009
  3. the Local Government (Auckland Law Reform) Bill - before the Auckland Governance Legislation Select Committee. Public submissions on this bill - the final of the three - closed on 12 February 2010.

Read submissions by Auckland Regional Council (ARC) on the third and second bills.

ARC submissions to the Local Government Commission

The ARC has made two submissions to the Local Government Commission (LGC) on wards, local boards, and boundaries for the new Auckland Council.  The LGC has been asked by the Government to provide recommendations in these areas.

Royal Commission on Auckland Governance

The Government responded on 7 April 2009 to the Royal Commission on Auckland Governance's recommendations.

The Government's response is broadly inline with the ARC's submission to the Royal Commission. In that submission, we recommended a single unitary authority including up to 30 community boards.
