Beachcare
Beachcare
Beach Care is about local communities taking action to address an environmental issue in their area. Beach Care brings together people who care about their coastal environment and want to understand how it operates so they can help to protect and care for it. Groups are involved in many aspects of coastal management. Some of the benefits of Beach Care include:
Community partnerships
Groups aim to encompass all coastal user groups and help to bring the community together.
Community solutions
A chance to implement best fit solutions that are practicable and achievable.
It's an opportunity to share knowledge
Integrate new ideas and learn from one another.
Beachcare Issues
Some of the issues facing the groups include coastal erosion, competing uses of beach space, vehicle access, damage caused by use of vehicles on the beach and foredune system, car wrecks on the beach, improving public facilities, litter etc. To combat some of these issues, Beach Care groups carry out various activities including:
- community education and liaison
- habitat restoration
- weed management
- pest control
- beach clean-ups
- beach access
- fencing and signage
- dune restoration including planting of native dune species such as Pingao and Spinifex
- plan and resource consent consultation and submissions.
