Land and water pollution

Industrial Pollution Prevention Programme (IP3)

What is the Industrial Pollution Prevention Programme?

The Industrial Pollution Prevention Programme (IP3) aims to work with industrial or trade processes, addressing any risks of pollution to land and/or water. A particular focus is the pollution of stormwater leaving sites after rainfall, which then pollutes our streams, rivers, estuaries and harbours.

The programme involves an environmental site assessment, which is a systematic and documented assessment of your company's activities to identify:

  • any sources of onsite ground or stormwater contamination
  • provide you with assistance in improving site management
  • help you to minimise the environmental risks associated with your activities; ensuring you comply with relevant environmental laws and regulations.

While we will be able to provide some suggestions on ways to resolve issues the ultimate responsibility to rectify problems lies with your company.

What will the IP3 assessment provide?

Depending on the level and type of pollution risks, the assessment may include:

Cost of the site assessment

There is usually no initial cost to your company, however if we have visited your site before and/or find significant pollution we may seek to recover costs, which can include officer's time, mileage, sample analysis fees and any other material expenses.

How long will the site assessment take?

We aim to send you an assessment report within 10 working days of the site visit.

It is your responsibility to ensure that your activities comply with relevant legislation.
