Auckland's natural environment

Plant, restore, protect

Over the last 800 years New Zealand has lost two-thirds of its native forests, 32 per cent of its native birds and over 90 per cent of freshwater wetlands.

Get involved and plant, restore and protect our native landscape!

Get educated! Familiarise yourself with which flora and fauna are pests to our native environment:

We also run a series of small-fund initiatives to help you make positives changes:

Weedbusters

The Weedbusters small-scale initiative fund is supported by the ARC and the Department of Conservation (DoC). Funding covers costs for tools, herbicides, mulcher hire, greenwaste disposal and promotional activities to get Weedbusters groups off the ground.

Funding is on application and is available until funding limits are reached each financial year. Regional Weedbuster co-ordinators from both the regional council and DoC will make the final decision on applications.

Criteria for successful funding applications:

  • groups or individuals must register as Weedbusters
  • projects can be on public land or on private land where two or more landowners are working together by either targeting specific high-risk weed species or as part of a wider restoration project. Projects cannot be based in private gardens (not including undeveloped gullies) or on productive farmland
  • the funding must be for weed-related initiatives, not for replanting or recently planted native trees (funding for this is usually available through other schemes administered by councils and government departments)
  • the weed control must be carried out with best practice management techniques as outlined on the Weedbusters website for each weed species.
