Wastewater
Onsite wastewater treatment
On-site wastewater treatment and disposal fully occurs on the property where the wastewater is generated.
Wastewater generated from dwellings in areas outside of network sewer areas must be treated and discharged on-site, using septic tanks or package treatment plants.
Different wastewater treatment systems provide different levels of treatment:

Onsite waste water treatment
Septic Tanks (with outlet filter) (Septic Tank Factsheet link)
Secondary Treatment:
Aerated Wastewater Treatment Plants
Advanced Secondary:
Recirculating and Single Pass Sand Filters
Recirculating Textile Filters
Tertiary Treatment:
Addition of UV sterilisation to secondary/advanced secondary systems
Higher treatment levels will be required where there are environmental site constraints such as high groundwater levels or nearby surface waters, including streams, stormwater channels and the coastal marine area.
