Elinor Vernon

Barquentine

The Elinor Vernon (official number 101474) was a barquentine of 570 tons, built in 1876, by J. B. Nutt, Pembroke, USA. She measured 150 x 32.4 x 17 ft, and had two decks.

1876	Built in 1876, by J. B. Nutt in Pembroke, USA.
1879	The vessel made 12 trips to Auckland from 13 May 1879 between 22 December 1892.
1894	In April 1894 she was sold to a Dunedin firm and converted to a hulk.
1907	The Elinor Vernon was sold to the Black Ball Coal Company in June 1907 and was used for many years as a coal hulk in Wellington.
1916	She was later towed to Auckland by the SS Ngahere in September 1916, where she was used as a hulk.
1927	The Elinor Vernon was condemned in 1927.
Disposal	On 21 June 1928, the hulk was towed to Rangitoto. Her cabins and forepeak were filled with waste paper saturated with kerosene and the vessel was burnt.
