Gladbrook (ex County of Anglesea)

Barque Gladbrook

 

 

The County of Anglesea was an iron-hulled barque of 1000 tons, built in Liverpool in 1877 by R. & J. Evans & Co. It changed it's name to Gladbrook in 1911 when it was owned by the Union Steam Ship Company from, and was used for storing coal in later years.

 

 

 

1877Built in 1877 by R. & J. Evans & Co in Liverpool, UK.
1911Made one trip to Auckland on 8 June 1911 under the name County of Anglesea, and was converted to a hulk the same year by its new owner, the Union Steamship Company.
1918The vessel was recommissioned as the Gladbrook on 27 July 1918, and towed to Port Chalmers. The vessel sailed for Suva, Fiji, and upon her arrival was again converted to a hulk.
1924In June 1924 the Gladbrook arrived back in Auckland where she was licensed as a hulk, and was used for storing coal.
DisposalOne 19 December 1945 the Gladbrook was towed out and beached on Rangitoto Island.
TODAYThe remains of the Gladbrook have not yet been positively identified but are thought to be located in Wreck Bay.
