We hope you enjoy your Regional Park experience, but please take care!
Walking
- Plan your route carefully, take a track map and keep to the designated tracks
- Wear appropriate clothing and footwear
- Let someone know where you are going
Vehicles
- Please take all valuables with you and lock your vehicle at all times
Water safety
West coast beaches are fun for swimming but can be very dangerous and sadly people have drowned in the surf. Please take note of the following water safety tips:
- Swim between the flags and only when lifeguards are on patrol
- Listen to the advice from surf lifeguards
- Never swim or surf alone
- If in doubt, stay out
- Be sunsmart
- Learn to recognise rip currents
- Always use the correct and safe equipment
- Never swim when tired or cold
- Consider other water users.

Rock fishing
Rock fishing has one of the highest fatality rates amongst recreational sports in New Zealand. The following safety tips may save your life on the rocks:
Prepare
- Learn how to swim for your survival
- Check the swell, weather and tide forecast
- Wear lace-up shoes such as basketball boots and never wear gumboots
- Wear a lifejacket
- Tell someone where you are going and when you will return
- Take a cell phone
- Never fish alone
Beware of large and unexpected waves
- Never turn your back on the ocean
- Have an escape route for large waves and do not get stranded by the incoming tide
- Maintain a safe distance from the water especially when there is swell
- Beware of slippery rocks
- Be Smart
- Follow advice of safety signs
- If a fish or equipment is swept into a dangerous area or the ocean, leave it there
- If in doubt about the conditions or your own ability find a safer location
