Dogs are permitted on a lead on tracks, and from carpark out on to the beach. Dogs are also so permitted on Bethells and to O'Neill Bay off the leash but must be under control during daylight hours and kept inside the green markers pegs.

Lake Wainamu Track

Starting 2 km before Te Henga (Bethells) beach car park this route provides an easy wander along a shallow sandy stream, past towering sand dunes along to Lake Wainamu. Lake Wainamu is a rare impounded lake, formed by sand damming the streams. Enjoy a swim and keep following the track around the northern side of the lake to its head where Wainamu stream cascades over Waitohi (baptismal waters) Falls. Return back around the lake the same way as you came.

Access to this scenic walk starts opposite the Lake Wainamu entrance and leads over to O’ Neills bay (a 45 minute walk), before leading you along the dramatic coastline. Note: The walkway is administered by the Department of Conservation and sections of this track are closed for lambing from 1 August to 1 October.
