Hillary Trail

How challenging is it?

It ain't Everest but it ain't easy!

How long is it?

Approximately 70km,over four days and three nights. However trampers may choose to arrange their own pick ups at various places along the trail, or increase the number of days taken to complete the trail.

How challenging is it?

The trail will be a challenge for many due to hilly terrain, intense rain forest and exposed coastline. Some of the days are long compared to other multi-day tramps.

The tracks forming the trail are predominantly of a tramping track standard and cannot be compared to a Great Walk. The terrain is varied so there is a lot of climbing up and down, many tracks will be steep, rutted, `rooty' and slippery. Tracks will be particularly muddy in winter.

We recommend checking the DOC website for track conditions on the Te Henga Walkway section before starting the trail.

There are sections of road walking, the longest being 3.5km. There are a number of unbridged streams that you will need to cross and you may have to walk through water up to your knees.

Am I up to it?

The Hillary Trail is recommended for experienced trampers and those with a high level of fitness.

For people with limited tramping experience, we suggest you train for the trail by doing some practice overnight tramps, consider lengthening the time taken to complete the tramp or break the tramp into day trips.

Staff and rangers at the Arataki Visitor Centre will gladly help you plan your tramp. Please drop in for a visit before you set off, to ask any questions and ensure that you are well prepared for completing the Hillary Trail.

You will also find information and a Hillary Trail display at the Arataki Visitor Centre.
