Regional Open Space Strategy
With a projected population of two million in 2050, will the Auckland region still be able to enjoy the public open spaces that we now take for granted?
To promote an integrated and strategic approach to Open Space planning, the eight councils in the Auckland region together with the Department of Conservation and the Ministry for the Environment have developed a Regional Open Space Strategy.
The Regional Open Space Strategy was finalised in 2005 and presents a vision for Auckland's regional open spaces for the next 50 years. It outlines action plans to achieve this vision and the vital role that open space plays in contributing to the quality of life for people in the Auckland region.
Open Space areas include 26 regional parks, beaches and sports fields, along with other public areas e.g. town squares, streets and footpaths in urban areas ('Public Space').
