It is a draft framework for plant and animal pest management in the Auckland region, for the period July 2007 - June 2012.

Auckland Regional Pest Management Strategy 2002-2007

Foreword

The Auckland region occupies only 2% of the total land area of New Zealand, but it is home to thousands of introduced plants, many introduced animals and an unknown number of introduced invertebrates. The majority of these species are beneficial or at least do not impact detrimentally on the environment. However, there are some which do harm the natural, human or economic environment.

With over 150 endangered animals and plants, including some of the world's rarest birds, significant forest, scrub and wetland areas, and offshore islands, the impact of pests is a major issue within the Auckland region. The Council has a strong commitment to preserving and enhancing the natural values of the region in partnership with the people of the Auckland region.

The Auckland region is a major entry point to New Zealand. As such, the threat from potentially harmful new incursions is significant. The Council will co-operate with the biosecurity agencies charged with protecting our borders, and provide appropriate support when required.

The current strategy includes:

  • a wide range of plant and animal pests
  • a Community Initiatives Programme that has empowers communities in regard to pest issues, with the council providing advice, information and support
  • a Research Organism category to allow considered decisions to be made on the inclusion of new pests
  • a broadening of the criteria for areas receiving Possum control work. This will allow Council to assist communities with Possum control and widen the scope of the current programme to target natural peninsula and other features to ensure that re-invasion is minimised
  • a strengthening of the support for communities undertaking mustelid and rodent control work as part of integrated pest management regimes.
