Alan Hoffman Visit to New Zealand September 2006
Alan Hoffman is a highly regarded consultant specialising in innovative planning solutions for transport and urban strategies. Based in San Diego, Alan has consulted to the private and public sector around the world on both the land use aspects of Transit Oriented Design and the planning of regionally effective transit networks. Many clients in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, India and South America have gone to Alan for assistance in making site- and precinct- level developments both pedestrian and passenger transport friendly.
The Auckland Regional Council brought Alan to New Zealand principally to conduct a one day course on Transit Oriented Design. While he was here, he also spoke to a range of audiences in other forums.
Transit Oriented Design: One Day Course
The one day course Alan conducted was a local version of the acclaimed course he has given in many other centres, including the University of California (Davis), the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the U.S. Institute of Transportation Engineers (Minneapolis), the U.S. Federal Transit Administration (Washington D.C.) and the Queensland Institute of Technology (Brisbane).
The course's acclaim stems from Alan's ability to effectively convey his extensive understanding of TOD issues with technical expertise, numerous case studies drawn from his experience around the world, and even humour.
"Alan's course was thought-provoking, inspiring, relevant and, most importantly, practical. His vision is not anti-car, but more inclusive of other options. He shows us that there are TOD opportunities everywhere we look.'"
- Anthony Cross, Manager, Transport Service Design, Greater Wellington Regional Council and attendee at Alan's TOD course in Brisbane
