Residential building consents in the Auckland region

Residential building consent statistics authorised in the Auckland region for 2007 show a continuing decline, with this trend declining since 2003.

  

Significant trends over the last five years (2003 - 2007):

Over the last five years (2003 - 2007) all councils in the region recorded a reduction in the total number of consents authorised.

The total number of residential consents in the region peaked in 2003 when 8,763 consents were authorised. Thereafter, consents have declined to a low of 5,441 in 2007.

When compared to 2003, there were 3,322 (38 per cent) fewer consents in 2007. The largest reduction in consents was from Manukau City with 1,252 (51 per cent) fewer consents, followed by Waitakere City, 630 (49 per cent) and Rodney District, 589 (40 per cent).

From 2003 to 2007 there were a total of 52,754 residential dwellings given consent in the Auckland region. The trend for the number of dwellings given consent has been declining since 2004. In this five year period, the highest number of residential dwellings issued in any given year was in 2004 (14,325 dwellings) and the lowest was in 2007 (6,881 dwellings).

In 2005 there were only 9,347 dwellings authorised compared to 14,325 in 2004. Auckland City recorded the largest decrease in dwellings authorised during this time with 3,538 (57 per cent) less dwellings authorised in 2005 compared with 2004.

The number of residential consents for 10 or more dwellings has continued to decrease. In 2003 a total of 83 consents were issued, compared with only 31 consents in 2007. Of these 31 consents, Auckland City Council issued the majority with 18 (58 per cent) consents and continues to issue the greatest number of these consents.

For the year Jan to Dec 2007

Manukau issued the greatest number of residential consents with 1,218 (22 per cent) in 2007. This was followed by Auckland with 1,010 (18.5 per cent) and Rodney District with 887 (16 per cent).

A total of 6,881 residential dwellings were given consent in the Auckland region in 2007.

Commercial building consents in the Auckland region

Commercial building consent statistics authorised in the Auckland region for 2007 show a continuing decline. This trend has been declining for the last five years.

Significant trends over the last five years (2003 - 2007):

Over the last five years a total of 4,422 commercial consents were approved in the region. Of these, Rodney District Council issued the most number of commercial consents (1,049 or 24 percent), followed by Auckland City (873 or 20 per cent), Manukau City (837 or 19 per cent) and Franklin District Council (735 or 17 per cent).

The number of commercial consents in the region peaked in 2004 where 1,081 consents were authorised. Thereafter, consents have declined to a low of 723 in 2007.

Auckland City has the biggest decrease in commercial consents in this five year period. In 2003 the number of commercial consents issued in the Auckland City was 178. By 2007 this had dropped to 118 or a reduction of 60 consents (34 per cent).

For the year Jan to Dec 2007

723 commercial consents were issued in 2007, compared with 890 consents in 2005/2006 and 1,081 consents in 2004.

Of these 723 consents, Rodney District Council issued the greatest number with 184 commercial consents (25 per cent) followed by Manukau City with 143 consents (20 per cent), Franklin District Council with 134 consents (19 per cent) and Auckland City with 118 consents (16 per cent).
