Washing or tipping paint or thinners down your stormwater drain will cause serious pollution.

The effects of this pollution include:

  • the death of marine and stream life, including plants, fish and shellfish
  • the pollution of your local stream, lake or beach where you swim.

So where should you wash paintbrushes?

Water based paints:

  • wash out paintbrushes from water based paints in an inside sink or over your grass or garden
  • allow any unused paint to dry in the bottom of the tin and dispose of it with your household rubbish

Oil based paints:

  • wash out paintbrushes from oil based paints in a container with thinners. Filter the thinners and reuse
  • if you need to dispose of the thinners, take them to the Hazmobile.
