Overview
The Auckland Regional Council has a significant interest in the enhancement and preservation of Auckland's waterfront. The council is committed to achieving a world class waterfront for the region, and it is a joint signatory to the Waterfront Vision 2040. The Council owns a significant amount of land at the waterfront, and through its council controlled organisation - Auckland Regional Holdings, it is 100 per cent owner of Ports of Auckland.
Where?
Auckland's CBD waterfront stretches from Westhaven Marina in the west to Teal Park in the east. This stretch encompasses a number of distinctive precincts - the Western Reclamation, Viaduct Harbour, the Central wharves and the Port.
Why?
The waterfront plays a major role in the region's economy. The port, marine and fishing industries have shaped the economic success of Auckland and they will continue to be vital to the region's economy in the future. The waterfront is also the region's gateway to the Waitemata Harbour, the Hauraki Gulf and its islands beyond.
Auckland's CBD waterfront is one of its greatest assets. Major city roads including Fanshawe and Quay streets shape the landward boundary of the waterfront area. Recognising the integration and inter-relationships between the waterfront and adjacent areas has been an important part of developing the waterfront vision.
What? - The Waterfront Vision
As port operations consolidated to the eastern end of the CBD waterfront, large areas became available for development and public access. In 2005 an integrated approach to the future development of the waterfront began. A partnership was formed between Auckland Regional Council and Auckland City Council, working closely with Ports of Auckland Limited, to develop the Waterfront Vision. This vision provides a framework to guide the future development of the waterfront. It was published after consultation with a wide range of stakeholders in the area and with residents and ratepayers of Auckland.
By taking a big picture approach, the vision sets the high level strategic direction for the waterfront area. The framework sits above the detailed planning for specific areas.
The vision for the waterfront is of a world-class destination that excites the senses and celebrates our sea-loving Pacific culture and maritime history. It supports commercially successful and innovative businesses and is a place for all people, an area rich in character and activities that link people to the city and the sea.
