Queens Wharf lies at the heart of Auckland's CBD waterfront.

The Government and Auckland Regional Council announced in May 2009 that they would purchase the wharf for $40 million. The redeveloped wharf will be open for public access and feature a premier cruise ship terminal for Auckland and New Zealand.  It will also be a temporary ‘live site' for fans during the Rugby World Cup 2011.

Queens Wharf design competition and options

In August 2009, the Government, Auckland Regional Council and Auckland City Council launched a design competition to help determine how new facilities on Queens Wharf might look and work for Rugby World Cup 2011 public celebrations and beyond.

The design competition was put on hold in November 2009 while the Government, Auckland Regional Council and Auckland City Council reviewed the timing and scope of the wharf's development.

Four possible development options are now being considered for the wharf.

Three of the options are temporary solutions, while the fourth option is a proposal to build a cruise ship terminal and public open space in time for Rugby World Cup 2011. Option four was developed as an entry to the design competition run in late 2009, and refined further earlier this year.

The NZ Government has recently launched a website for the public to view and comment on the designs - visit www.queenswharfnz.com
