Wynyard Quarter
What, Where, Why?
Wynyard Quarter, also known as the tank farm or the Western Reclamation sits at the western end of the Auckland CBD waterfront, adjacent to Victoria Park, and the Viaduct Harbour. Wynyard Quarter represents the most significant area for redevelopment within the Auckland CBD waterfront consisting of 35 hectares of reclaimed land which has historically accommodated Port, fishing, maritime and bulk liquids activities among other things.
The progressive reduction in bulk liquids stored at Wynyard Quarter since the construction of the Marsden Point to Wiri oil pipeline and the approaching expiration of long term leases for the remaining bulk liquid operators has enabled a change in planning direction for the area.
There has been continued public interest in realising greater public access to Auckland's waterfront, an opportunity provided through the redevelopment of Wynyard Quarter. At the same time, the quarter presents an opportunity to accommodate growth in residential, commercial, retail and entertainment land use within close proximity of the CBD, an area that would support the region's growth model for accommodating our growing population and their needs.
As much of the land is in the ownership of Auckland Regional Holdings, the Auckland Regional Council and Auckland City Council, there is a responsibility to utilise this land in the public's interest. The aspirations for this area therefore include social, economic, environmental and cultural objectives.
