Background

The Building Act 2004 (BCA) was passed by government to improve the control of, and encourage better practices in, building design and construction.

Under the Building Act, regional authorities have statutory responsibility for a range of regulatory processes associated with building consents for dams and for dam safety.

Auckland Regional Council has transferred its building consent powers to Environment Waikato who already have the specialist expertise and accreditation for processing building consents for dams.
