Maori Relations Unit
Te Pae Hononga Maori (Maori Relations team) is responsible for:
- Initiating, developing and implementing strategies that enable the Council to meet its statutory responsibilities to Tangata Whenua.
- Facilitating communication between Tangata Whenua and Council.
- Providing advice and support across Council in relation to things Maori - e.g. in policy development, staff education, research, kaitiakitanga issues and initiatives, consultation, etc.
The key practical outcomes desired include:
- The development of effective and sustainable relationships between the Council and Tangata Whenua of the Auckland region.
- Raised awareness within the Organisation of resource management issues of significance to Tangata Whenua, consultation processes and Tikanga Maori (Maori customs and protocols).
- Council and Tangata Whenua are well informed of issues of interest and concern to each other leading to equitable outcomes.
