Coastal compartment management plans

Coastal Compartment Management Plans are non-statutory plans that articulate a shared vision for an area and identify the measures required to achieve that vision. They are comprehensive management plans that integrate the protection, use and development of a section of coastline. They may be incorporated into statutory plans through plan changes or may be implemented through works programmes or other activities depending on the nature of the area concerned. The content of CCPs will include activities in the coastal marine area and on adjacent land.

The ARC has developed the plans below in partnership with local councils. The purpose of our CCMP project is to achieve improved integrated management of the use and development of prioritised sections of coast through the preparation of management plans in partnership with local councils and communities.

Pahurehure Inlet Management Plan

Along with the Papakura District Council, we have prepared a management plan for the development and use of the Pahurehure Inlet, covering the coastal marine area and adjacent land between Manukau Golf Course (north of Conifer Grove) and Strathallan, Hingaia College. This is most of the coastline of Papakura District.

The management plan was approved by both councils in December 2006.

Algies Bay Coastal Compartment Plan

Rodney District Council and ARC have prepared a management plan to guide the future use and development of Algies Bay in Rodney District.

The plan was approved by both councils in December 2006.

Waiuku Estuary Management Plan

The ARC, Franklin District Council and the Waiuku/Awhitu Community Board have prepared a draft management plan for the Waiuku Estuary.

The plan covers the coastal marine area and adjacent land between Waiuku and the Needles (near the steel mill). It identifies the values of this area that are important to the community and proposes a range of actions to enhance the accessibility of the estuary while protecting its ecological and heritage values.

The draft plan aims to address issues that have been identified during public consultation in 2006 including:

Some of the actions proposed in the draft plan include:

  • new walkways
  • boardwalks and viewing platforms
  • mangrove removal and dredging.

Consultation is now closed on the Waiuku Estuary Management Plan.

In February 2007 150 people sent in feedback on the draft plan. A summary of the feedback and a list of submitters can be downloaded here.

A hearing is planned for December 2007. Those people who said they wished to speak about their feedback have been informed of the hearing details.
