Harbourmaster

Commercial vessels

The Auckland regional Harbourmaster has responsibility for overall harbour management. The commercial port, run by Ports of Auckland Ltd (POAL), is the major player in terms of this management function.

Commercial vessel

The ARC Harbourmaster's office is responsible for the navigation safety of the regions waters. Commercial vessels and large recreational vessels (20 metres or greater in length) using the waters of the Auckland region have particular operating requirements. The movement and operation of these vessels is subject to requirements which may place responsibilities on them or vessels navigating near to them. Owners and Masters of commercial vessels and large recreational vessels should contact the Harbourmasters office prior to arrival in the regions waters.

Port facility operators, such as the Ports of Auckland, are responsible for the operation of the wharfs and facilities they own or operate. The master of a vessel wishing to use a commercial wharf should contact the facility operator prior to arrival.

Civil Defence

The ARC Harbourmasters' office is responsible for the Civil Defence Response within the waters of the Auckland Region. This is part of the coordinated Civil Defence Management for the Auckland region. This includes ensuring the co-ordination of vessel movements prior to or during any civil defence event, notifications to facility owners, operators and vessels.
