Personal water crafts

In 1999, a Auckland Regional Council Navigation Safety Bylaws was passed in Auckland requiring all personal watercraft (PWC) used in Auckland's waters to registered. Since then, identical bylaws have been introduced in Northland and Waikato. It is illegal to use an unregistered personal watercraft, such as a jet-ski, in these regions.

Registration was introduced to provide a degree of accountability by PWC owners, and also to keep track of craft identification in the event of theft.

What is a personal water craft?

Jetski

A personal water craft (PWC) is a power-driven vessel with a fully enclosed hull.
It does not take on water if capsized, and is designed to be operated by a person standing, sitting astride, or kneeling on it, but not sitting within it (i.e. a jet-ski).

How do I register my PWC?

PWC registration is a one-off registration, valid for the lifetime of the machine, so all you have to do is:

  • complete a Personal Watercraft Registration form
  • include the registration fee of $35.00 plus $12.50 for registration stickers (if required)
  • post your completed form and fee to the ARC, Jetski registration, Private Bag 92012, Auckland
  • we will then confirm your registration in writing.

Note:

  • prices are inclusive of GST
  • payment via credit card is not accepted
  • standard stickers supplied are black numbers. If your jetski is black, then white numbers can be issued. Please indicate on your registration form if your jetski is black.
  • if you wish to register your jetski in person, go to:
