Mahurangi action plan
Introduction
What is the Mahurangi Action Plan?
Launched in 2004, the Mahurangi Action Plan (MAP) is a catchment based restoration project, focused on protecting the long term health of the Mahurangi. The project was initiated by the Auckland Regional Council (ARC) and the Rodney District Council (RDC). The project in now in its sixth year following completion of the five year pilot phase in June 2009.
MAP was set-up in response to the results from long-term environmental monitoring that indicated that the health of Mahurangi Harbour was in decline. This monitoring found:
- increased sedimentation smothering marine life and causing a decline in diversity
- common shellfish no longer found in certain areas of the harbour,
- reduced water depths impacting recreational boating activities
Why is there a problem in Mahurangi?
Erosion is a natural process, but the high-levels of erosion in the Mahurangi catchment has led to increased levels of sediment, pollutants and other contaminants being deposited into the harbour and surrounding waterways.
What is the goal of the Mahurangi Action Plan?
To halt, slow or reverse the adverse effects of sedimentation on the Mahurangi Harbour.
How is the Mahurangi Action Plan achieving this goal?
By reducing erosion and the amount of sediment being deposited into the harbour. This is achieved through a range of measures, including:
- managing projects in the area, particularly with landowners
- significant fencing and riparian planting
- compliance monitoring - earthworks, forestry
- environmental monitoring
- research and investigation including a sediment source assessment project
- extensive environmental education throughout the local community and schools.
