Whangateau implementation project
Action to date
A series of community and staff meetings were held to help develop the technical reports and write the implementation plan for the Whangateau. Below outlines the key projects for 2009/10
Integration and monitoring
Objective is to increase understanding of issues relating to the Whangateau harbour and catchment
- Set up and coordinate Whangateau Forum
- Investigate the long-term effect of causeways in relation to sediment and mangroves
- Develop stock take of current monitoring in the catchment and investigate increase in monitoring of shellfish harvesting with Ministry of Fisheries
Sediment, awareness raising and cultural heritage
Objective is to address specific issues and integrating/building on local community actions and commitment
- Investigate current state of forestry in the catchment
- Undertake priority activities to reduce sediment, including farm plans, fencing and riparian planting grants to the ARC’s EIF fund
- Undertake education and engagement programmes with communities in particular forestry
- ARC will manage sediment discharges in accordance with Auckland Regional Plan: Sediment Control (through objectives, policies and rules)
- Map current walking trails in the harbour and catchment
- Work with RDC harbourmaster to investigate education for water safety and recreation within the harbour
- Support community awareness raising activities, in particular for Seaweek
- Identify and raise awareness of priority cultural heritage sites in the Whangateau catchment and harbour
