Whangateau implementation project
Introduction
The Whangateau implementation plan (WIP) sits within the Sustainable Catchment Programme (SCP). Provision of $100,000 was made in the 2008/09 Annual Plan to scope the development of the WIP, which has been undertaken in three stages:
- Background and identification of issues, through community discussions and review of existing cultural, environmental and socio-economic information.
- Scoping document – summary of key issues, gaps and options analysis.
- Report back to community on findings and potential intervention activities for the 2009/10 financial year.
Whangateau – highly valued harbour
The Whangateau is a highly valued harbour and catchment with outstanding ecological, habitat, heritage, recreational and landscape values. While the harbour is still of high quality, that status is threatened by a number of specific but interlinked problems. While the problems may be small, they have the potential cumulatively to affect the health of the harbour.
Issues facing the Whangateau
Background investigations identified a number of issues for the Whangateau catchment. While the harbour is still of high quality, that status is threatened by a number of specific but interlinked problems. While the problems may be small, they have the potential cumulatively to affect the health of the harbour.
- sedimentation of streams from forestry,
- ground and surface water quality,
- habitat quality of lowland streams,
- habitat loss and disturbance,
- wastewater management,
- development effects on rural amenity and natural character,
- lack of protection for productive land capacity,
- fragmentation of economic and environmental resources,
- lack of coordinated conservation and resource management,
- loss of cultural values and custodianship,
- loss of history.
Whangateau Implementation Project focus
The project has a two pronged focus
- improving our understanding of the Whangateau harbour through integrating and sharing of information
- address specific issues facing the harbour with action on the ground
