How much money can I apply for?
EIF provides one-off grants usually between $500 and $5,000. For exceptional projects, grants over $5,000 maybe considered. No more than $10,000 of the EIF can be allocated to one project in any one round.
What happens if there are more projects than the EIF funding can cover?
Every year the amount of funding requested is in excess of the amount available. Unfortunately, some projects miss out because of the sheer number of great projects that have applied of funding.
Can we implement a project on land we don't legally own?
To implement a project on land that is not yours legally you must provide, with your application, written permission from the owning body. If the project is on public land the body must significantly contribute towards the project i.e. labour, materials, advice.
What happens if I need a resource consent to implement my project?
EIF requires you to obtain a resource consent prior to submitting your application. The EIF will not pay for resource consent applications or the work resulting from a consent.
How long can my project run for?
The part of the project you are requesting funding for can run for 1 year, starting when you are notified the outcome of your application by the end of October.
How long do I have to claim my grant?
Funding is a one-off grant that must be claimed within one year of your application's approval.
When does the funding round open?
The 2009 funding round will open on Monday 27 April and close on Wednesday 8 July. To go on the waiting list for the 2009 funding round please contact the EIF Coordinator 09 366 2000 or eif@arc.govt.nz
When can I start my project?
Your project must start after your application has been approved. Funding is not retrospective.
Can I submit more than one application?
You are encouraged to submit one application unless you have two (or more) distinct projects. Please remember that a small amount of funds have to be distributed to many initiatives.
How many times can I apply to the EIF?
There is no set amount of times you can apply, EIF is a contestable fund.
Who is responsible for health and safety on the project site?
The funding recipient is responsible for ensuring all health and safety requirements are met by volunteers or contractors.
Why is the timing of the round in opening April, closing July and decision by November?
The timing is set at these times to give you time to plan your project for the coming year.
Can I purchase any types of plants?
No, EIF only supports restoration projects which use appropriate, native, ecosourced plant species. You should avoid unnatural cultivars of native plants such as variegated flax and garden variety hebes. For assistance phone the ARC, Natural Heritage Team 09-366-2000 to create a planting plan.
Does my project have to be on my own land?
No, if the project is on public land then the landowner must significantly contribute towards the project. This support can be in the form of labour, materials, advice etc. You are required to supply a letter of support from the landowner if the project, or part of the project, is not on your own land.
Can I claim for volunteer time?
No, volunteer time forms part of your 50% contribution and is calculated out at an hourly rate of $12 for volunteer labour and $25 for volunteer professional assistance.
Do I have to provide a 50% contribution?
Yes, you are expected to be actively involved in the project and make a significant contribution. EIF can contribute up to 50% of the total project cost for the year. You must be able to provide the remainder of the cost including your time, cash, other funding or contributions such as voluntary labour or donated materials.
Can I send in a late application?
We can not accept late applications, whether by post, courier, hand delivered or email. It is important to make sure the EIF Coordinator receives your application before the closing date.
Can I fax my application?
No, faxed applications are not accepted.
