Historic Clydesdale watering-hole being restored

The Waiau Pa Historical Trust is restoring an old well which once supplied water for teams of Clydesdale horses in the Franklin district.

Mr Ernie Volz, who built many of the early wells in the Waiau Pa area, dug the well by hand more than a century ago.

The Trust received a grant from the Auckland Regional Council's Environmental Initiatives Fund to help pay for stage one of the project. This included building a fence and gate, planting around the well to stop erosion and repairs to the well's hand pump. It also pays for research into wind flows to see if they can sustain a windmill on site.
