What is hazardous waste?
We use hazardous chemicals everyday without thinking about it. Hazardous waste can be a liquid, gas or solid, that may pose a threat to both the immediate and long-term health of the environment and community if disposed of incorrectly.
Hazardous waste may be one or more of the following:
- explosive
- flammable
- chemically reactive
- corrosive
- poisonous to plants and animals
- toxic to specific eco systems
- radioactive.
Common household hazardous waste
Hazardous waste within the household may include:
- all types of batteries
- solvents and paint strippers
- wood preservatives
- garden chemicals, pesticides, fungicides and fertilisers
- petrol, oil and other automotive products
- toilet and drain cleaners
- kitchen and oven cleaners
- pool chemicals
- bleach and chemicals
- furniture polish
- shoe polish
- nail polish and nail remover
- solvents/glues
- aerosol cans
- energy saver light bulbs and fluorescent tubes
- gas cylinders
