What is hazardous waste?

We use hazardous chemicals everyday without thinking about it. Hazardous waste can be a liquid, gas or solid, that may pose a threat to both the immediate and long-term health of the environment and community if disposed of incorrectly.

Hazardous waste may be one or more of the following:

• explosive
• flammable
• chemically reactive
• corrosive
• poisonous to plants and animals
• toxic to specific eco systems
• radioactive.

• nail polish and nail remover
• solvents/glues
• aerosol cans
• energy saver light bulbs and fluorescent tubes
