Sustainable land management

Rural land management advocates and facilitates farming practices which are sustainable both financially and environmentally. The primary areas of focus are as follows:

  • nutrient runoff
  • enrichment of waterways as a result of inappropriate fertiliser application
  • waste disposal or stock effluent
  • erosion and soil loss as a result of cultivation and stock impact in pastoral situations
  • deterioration of native forest and wetland habitats as a result of stock access.

Projects with the rural community

  • The ARC is currently working on a trial project to develop voluntary farm plans in association with the Mahurangi Action Plan.
  • It is envisaged that these plans will become a tool in the general land management work throughout the region, working with individual farms who are motivated to make their farm management practices more environmentally sustainable.
