Freshwater environment
Monitoring freshwater
The ARC monitors freshwater health
To keep track of the health of Auckland's freshwater environment the ARC monitors:
- water quality of streams, rivers, lakes and aquifers
- the abundance and diversity of plants, macroinvertebrates and fish (the ecology) that live in our streams, rivers and lakes
- water flow to determine impacts of water use and floods on streams and rivers
- climate including rainfall, air temperature and windspeed.
The ARC is developing strategies and policies specifically to deal with the issues associated with growth in the Auckland region.
To try and minimise impacts on the freshwater environment we conduct compliance monitoring on consents and carry out pollution control and response activities.
Protecting the freshwater environment requires every one to be involved. The ARC supports community initiatives to help the freshwater environment through the Environmental Initiatives Fund.
