Monitoring freshwater

The ARC monitors freshwater health

To keep track of the health of Auckland's freshwater environment the ARC monitors:

• water quality of streams, rivers, lakes and aquifers
• the abundance and diversity of plants, macroinvertebrates and fish (the ecology) that live in our streams, rivers and lakes
• water flow to determine impacts of water use and floods on streams and rivers
• climate including rainfall, air temperature and windspeed.

The ARC consistently monitors the state of Auckland's freshwater environment and through more specific land develop monitoring programmes we monitor the effectiveness of our policies and decisions.

To try and minimise impacts on the freshwater environment we conduct compliance monitoring on consents and carry out pollution control and response activities.

Protecting the freshwater environment requires every one to be involved. The ARC supports community initiatives to help the freshwater environment through the Environmental Initiatives Fund.
