Regional lakes
There are more than 30 lakes in the Auckland region from volcanic crater lakes and peat lakes, to lagoons trapped behind sand dunes.
The water quality of a lake, the aquatic life and plants that live within are is closely linked to the land use in the area surrounding it (its ‘catchment'). What happens in the catchment can affect the amount of water, nutrients, sediment, and other contaminants that enter the lake.
The ARC monitors the water quality of the seven largest natural lakes within the Auckland region.
Learn about the unique features and the current environmental state of each of the lakes we're monitoring. Discover the types of problems that have occurred and what's being done to protect each lake.
