Advice and funding

There are a several funds that can provide community organisations and, in some cases, private property owners with financial assistance to care for historic buildings and other heritage places.

Auckland Regional Council funds

Local authority funds

Some city and district councils have community assistance funds to encourage local communities to look after heritage places. In some cases councils may offer regulatory fee waivers or rates relief to encourage owners of heritage places to care for their properties.

Local licensing trusts may also accept applications by community organisations for assistance with the conservation of historic places and buildings.

North Shore City Council

  • Heritage Trust - provides limited funding for restoring heritage buildings.
  • Valuing our Built Heritage - pamphlet that gives advice on making resource consent applications for restoring, altering, or removing heritage buildings.
  • Good Solutions Guide for Heritage Buildings - a booklet which provides lots of good ideas for adding to or making changes to heritage homes.

Waitakere City Council

  • Provides funding or rates relief to encourage community groups to be involved in looking after the city's heritage and cultural resources.
  • Their website has a useful calendar showing deadlines for funding applications to a variety of sources, including the Portage and Waitakere Licensing Trusts and links to other funding providers.

Auckland City Council

  • Built Heritage Fund - provides grants to assist people to restore and protect buildings of historical importance. The $50,000 fund is available for buildings listed on the schedule of Buildings, Heritage Properties, Places, Monuments and Objects of Special Value in the district plan.
  • Auckland City will also generally waive normal planning charges and costs for scheduled heritage places.

Manukau City Council

  • Has contestable funds for various community purposes. Check out their website for useful advice for community organisations submitting applications for funding.

Rodney District Council

  • Heritage Item Assistance Fund - a contestable fund of $20,000 per year that is open to the public for the purpose of conserving, restoring, and protecting valued heritage items within the Rodney district.
  • A series of seven brochures are available, providing advice on appropriate ways to alter or restore historic houses. The brochures are available from all service centres and libraries in the district.
