CHI search charges
The ARC has recently undertaken a review of the Cultural Heritage Inventory in consultation with the New Zealand Archaeological Association (NZAA). This review has resulted in the development of a Policy and Procedure Manual which contains policies for the use of copies of the CHI and formalises the introduction of cost recovery charges for searches for commercial users. A percentage of revenue received by the ARC is passed on to the NZAA. This reflects the content of the NZAA file within the CHI.
The charges are based on the cost of access and maintenance of the database rather than the intrinsic value of the site information within the CHI. Charges will be actual and reasonable.
The fee structure is set out in more detail in the document. In summary the hourly rate for commercial searches is $80 + GST with a minimum charge of $50 + GST. Invoices will be sent to regular customers periodically itemising the requested searches. Non-commercial users such as students will normally be exempt from user charges.
What do I get for my money?
The basic search fee includes staff time to undertake the search and:
- up to 20 A4 pages of data (or part thereof)
- a list of bibliographic references listed in the record for those sites (if required)
- postage or phone/fax charges (within the Auckland Region).
Additional printer output or photocopying beyond 20 pages or at a larger format will be an additional charge of 20c per A4 page. Data can be written to CDROM for an additional cost of $10 + GST, including disc.
Results will normally be processed within 3 working days.
Summary data can also be supplied in electronic form via email. Summary data does not include detailed descriptive information or significance statements (if available).
More comprehensive searches are available which include:
- an ArcView geographic information system (GIS) map of site location, with NZAA number labelled, and legal boundaries shown (other coverage's available also)
- an ArcView GIS map showing systematic site surveys undertaken with bibliographic reference number
- a detailed search of the database using advanced queries to extract specific datasets.
An URGENT fee of $40 + GST will also apply for searches required within 1 working day.
What information do I need to provide?
To minimise the time taken for a search and the cost to the applicant it is recommended that the following information is supplied:
- a detailed map showing the exact area of interest, e.g. land parcel clearly depicted or NZMS 260 topographic location
- a specific grid search based on 7 digit NZMS 260 map co-ordinates with minimum and maximum eastings and northings
e.g.: Warkworth E 2659000:2661500 to N 6531000:6533000 - site types required (e.g. archaeological sites, built heritage, botanical, maritime, or all recorded places)
- an address for the invoice (if applicable) to be sent to. Where the address is a post office box you must also provide your street address.
Access to the CHI database within the ARC offices is available by appointment. Bibliographic material held by the ARC can be consulted within the office. Copyright regulations apply and permission is required from the author for any copying of reports contributed by consultants.
