Arataki Nature Trail
Walking track

A beautiful introduction to the flora and fauna of the Waitakere Ranges and a great addition to any visit to the Arataki Visitor Centre. The track is really a network of three gravelled loop walks. The Identification Loop is short and level, while the upper and lower loops contain graded descents and ascents. Making your way to the kauri knoll at the end of the lower track is recommended as a great example of remnant Kauri forest.

What to expect:

Walking tracks will:

  • have easy to moderate grades with drained surfaces, generally consisting of a compacted and drained surfaces.
  • be well sign-posted with directional signs at track entrances and junctions and have safety signs where required.

Walking tracks may:

  • have steps on excessively steep areas.
  • have timber boardwalks and bridges over permanent wet areas and waterways.
  • have seats and maintained views at areas of interest.
  • Walking tracks should be suitable for people with reasonable fitness levels.

Views:
Though there are no view shafts, the lookout from the kauri knoll through the understory is sublime.
Wheelchair access:
Yes - The identification trail is accessible to wheelchair users with assistance - this is due to slope, surface and weather conditions. The other loop walks have stairs and steep slopes.
Pram access:
Yes - The track has a wide gravel surface and the identification loop is level however other loops do have steep sections and there are steps at the kauri knoll.
Toilets:
The closest toilets are available behind the Education Centre. Additional toilets are available underneath the Visitor Centre.
Drinking water:
There is drinking water available at the Visitor Centre.

Directions:
The start of the track is accessed near the Education Centre via tunnel which runs underneath Scenic Drive. There are there loops all clearly signposted.

Security:
Theft from vehicles is not common but unfortunately can happen. You should take the same reasonable precautions you take when parking at other locations and remember to lock your vehicle and take your valuables with you.

How to get to Arataki Visitor Centre

The visitor centre is on Scenic Drive, 6km from Titirangi. From Auckland City, take State Highway 16 (north western motorway) and head west. Take Exit 2 onto Great North Road and follow signs to Titirangi. Drive through Titirangi Village and at the roundabout, take Scenic Drive. Continue 6km and the visitor centre is on the left.
