Dogs in parks

Introduction

Dogs are welcome in many of the Auckland Regional Parks. Dog restrictions vary from park to park.

It is very important to abide by these rules to protect the wildlife that live within our parks. Dogs are prohibited from all farm parks.

Ambury
Dogs are prohibited from park and the adjoining foreshore areas but are permitted on a lead on Loop Road linking Ambury Road and Kiwi Esplanade.
Anawhata
Dogs are allowed on a lead but are prohibited at all times on farm areas.
Arataki Visitor Centre
Dogs are allowed on a lead but not permitted inside the visitor centre.
Atiu Creek
Dogs are prohibited at Atiu Creek.
Auckland Botanic Gardens
You are welcome to walk your dog through the Gardens. We have an off the lead area at the northern end of the gardens. In the rest of the gardens you must use a lead.
Awhitu
Dogs are only permitted on a leash at the northern end of the park – at the end of Brook Road, past the main entrance to the park.
Cascades
Dogs are allowed on a lead. Dogs are not allowed at Lake Wainamu and surrounding areas.
Cornwallis
Dogs are only allowed on the beach at Cornwallis, they must be on a lead between 9am and sunrise daily.
Duder
Dogs are prohibited at Duder.
Hamlins Hill Mutukaroa
Dogs are allowed but must be on a lead.
Huia
Dogs are allowed but must be on a lead.
Hunua Ranges
Dogs are allowed but must be on a lead. Dogs are prohibited from all designated camping and picnic areas.
Karekare
All dogs must be on a lead at Karekare. Dogs are prohibited access to Whatipu beach via Karekare and from the beach area south of Karekare beach.
Long Bay
All park land above the mean high water mark and adjoining beaches north of Vaughan stream - dogs are prohibited at all times. Below high water mark to Vaughan stream - dogs are allowed except during daylight savings between 10am and 6.30pm. Dogs must be under direct and continuous control at all times.
Mahurangi
Mahurangi West Sullivans Bay and Te Muri parkland and beaches: Dogs are prohibited at all times.

Cudlip Point Loop Track: Dogs are allowed all day except during July, August and September inclusive (during lambing season). Dogs must be on leads at all times.

Mita Bay: Dogs are allowed at all times on the beach only and the coastal/beach around to Opahi Bay. Dogs can only access Mita Bay by boat, or by foot from Opahi Bay (which is outside the park). Dogs must be under direct and continuous control at all times. Dogs are prohibited from the campground and parkland.

Scott Point land and beaches: Dogs are allowed except between 9am and 7pm from the first Sunday in October to the 3rd Sunday in March. Dogs must be under direct and continuous control at all times.

Mahurangi East land and beaches: Dogs are allowed all year round. Dogs must be under direct and continuous control at all times.
Mt Smart
Dogs are prohibited at Mt Smart.
Muriwai
Dogs are permitted on Muriwai Beach in winter. Restrictions apply over daylight savings hours where dogs are not allowed down the Southernmost 200 m of Muriwai Beach between 9:00 am and 7:00 pm. (Dogs are not allowed South of the surf tower and should be kept well north of the flags and away from people). Dogs are prohibited on Otakamiro Point and Maori Bay.
Omana
Dogs are allowed on the beach at Omana in winter but prohibited from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm during daylight saving time (summer). Dogs are prohibited from the farmed areas, campsites and picnic areas.
Pakiri
Dogs are prohibited at Pakiri.
Piha
Dogs are only permitted south of lion rock from 31 March to 1 November. Prohibited at North Piha at all times.
Scandrett
Dogs are prohibited at Scandrett.
Shakespear
Dogs are only permitted in the area between Army Bay and Okoromai Bay, but not between 9am and 7pm from the first Sunday in October to the 3rd Sunday in March. Dogs are prohibited at all times from Te Haruhi Bay, farmland and adjoining beaches.
Tapapakanga
Dogs are permitted on a leash but prohibited from 1 July – 30 November for lambing.
Tawharanui
Dogs are prohibited at Tawharanui.
Tawhitokino
Dogs are permitted if they are under control at all times or kept on a leash, but are prohibited at the campsite.
Te Henga - Bethells
Dogs are permitted on a lead on tracks, and from carpark out on to the beach. Dogs are also so permitted on Bethells and to O'Neill Bay off the leash but must be under control during daylight hours and kept inside the green markers pegs.
Te Rau Puriri
Dogs are prohibited at Te Rau Puriri.
Waharau
Dogs are permitted on leash but are prohibited between 1 July to 30 November (lambing season). Dogs are prohibited from all camping and picnic areas.
Waitakere Ranges
Dogs are permitted on a leash in many parts of the Waitakere Ranges. Please refer to individual locations for futher details.
Waitawa
Dogs are prohibited at Waitawa.
Wenderholm
Dogs are allowed at the the park entrance, walking track to the Waiwera Estuary and Kokuru Bay. Dogs are prohibited at all times from the main carpark, bush headlands, picnic areas and adjoining beaches.
Whakanewha
No dogs allowed to the west of Gordons Road including Poukaraka Flats. Dogs are prohibited on the beach side of Gordons Road to protect the rare and vulnerable ground dwelling birds in the area. Dogs must be kept under control in all other areas of the park.
Whakatiwai
Permitted on a lead. Prohibited from July to November.
Whatipu
Dogs are not permitted in the scientific reserve but can go on tracks (Omanawanui, Gibbons, Muir) but are not permitted on the track to the caves or on the beach.
