No Exceptions declaration
In November 2008, the ARC and seven local councils signed an Auckland Regional No Exceptions declaration. It's part of a plan launched by Government in 2005 to give all people the opportunity to participate in physical recreation and sport activities of their choice. The aim is to bring together organisations within a region, to formally commit to providing access for people with disabilities to sport and recreation opportunities.
The idea was developed by Sport and Recreation New Zealand (SPARC) and has been supported by councils, the Halberg Trust and Auckland Sport Groups.
The principles of the initiative are based on forward planning and raising the awareness and promotion of the no exception vision. The organisations have committed to providing:
- A range of facilities that are accessible to people with disabilities,
- A range of programmes that are accessible to people with disabilities,
- Access to no exceptions training for relevant facility and programme staff.
While the ARC has a strong history of its commitment to providing access for people with disabilities, there are a large range of opportunities to create a more inclusive regional parks experience.
One of the actions that has been prioritised by Councillors, is the audit of all of the fully developed regional parks to establish if a range of activities is accessible for people of all abilities within reach of the main arrival area. Any gaps will be put forward for consideration and prioritisation as part of the Regional Parks Management Plan review.
