Park safety information
Tramping and walking
Lace up those walking shoes, the regional parks have hundreds of kilometres of tracks available for you to discover so you can be sure there is a track right for you. Search the tracks available on the website and find one that matches your experience. It's worth noting the type of track, the track distance and track description.
However, whether setting out for 30 minutes or a few days you should always ensure you are equipped appropriately. Even though this is Auckland did you know that it sometimes snows on the tops of the Hunua Ranges!
Equipment
Carry a map, food, water, jacket and warm hat even in summer. Depending on the length of the trip you should also consider including a hooded raincoat, over-pants, hat and gloves, warm and fast drying tops, trousers and shorts, and thermal underwear made from wool or polypropylene.
Many tracks require good footwear or tramping boots and you should expect to get muddy on most tramping tracks and routes within the parks - especially during winter.
A comprehensive list of equipment can be found in the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council pamphlet Going Bush (316KB PDF)
While you are there you should also check out the following resources for staying safe in the outdoors:
You can order a map from regional parks on 09 366 2000 option 2 or pick one up from the Arataki Visitor Centre.
Tell someone your plans
Don't rely on your cell phone - in some parks coverage may be patchy or your battery might be flat.
It is always a good idea to leave an intention form with details of your trip (return date and time, planned route, party member names and vehicle details) with a responsible person, and don't forget to check in when you return. If you are travelling and don't have someone to contact you can leave your intentions form with the Arataki Visitor Centre.
Join a club
If you want to improve your skills, your experience or simply find some people to tramp with you could try joining a club:
