Auckland City Walk
Walking track

This walk is a favourite for Auckland families. It provides a good introduction to the area and is one of the most beautiful walking loops in the Waitakere Ranges. Marvel at the huge kauri, one with a girth of 6.5m, and the large totara which were once used to make magnificent waka (canoes). A short side track leads up the Cascade Falls, set amongst towering rocky bluffs. Information signs along the way explain interesting features of this forest.

What to expect:

Walking tracks will:

  • have easy to moderate grades with drained surfaces, generally consisting of a compacted and drained surfaces.
  • be well sign-posted with directional signs at track entrances and junctions and have safety signs where required.

Walking tracks may:

  • have steps on excessively steep areas.
  • have timber boardwalks and bridges over permanent wet areas and waterways.
  • have seats and maintained views at areas of interest.
  • Walking tracks should be suitable for people with reasonable fitness levels.

Directions:
Walk starts from swing bridge at lower end of picnic area and follows bank of Waitakere Stream. At junction of Cascade and Waitakere Streams a short track (150m) on right branches up to a small gorge and waterfall. Main walk continues across wooden bridge and along stream to a second bridge then ascends gradually back to upper picnic area on Falls Road.

Security:
Theft from vehicles is not common but unfortunately can happen. You should take the same reasonable precautions you take when parking at other locations and remember to lock your vehicle and take your valuables with you.

How to get to Cascades

Head along Scenic Drive. Fairy Falls are located on eastern slopes of the Waitakere Ranges about 5 km north of the Arataki Visitor Centre. Cascade Kauri and Lake Wainamu are on the Bethells Road. Take Falls Road to Cascade/Kauri.
