Lookout Track
Walking track

Though bush walking may not be the main reason for most people to visit Muriwai, this track should be able to convince most people that perhaps it should be. The track has a good surface and winds past mature coastal bush before displaying some of the best views on the west coast from the lookout platform. A great place for a spot of lunch or to watch the sun setting.

What to expect:

Walking tracks will:

  • have easy to moderate grades with drained surfaces, generally consisting of a compacted and drained surfaces.
  • be well sign-posted with directional signs at track entrances and junctions and have safety signs where required.

Walking tracks may:

  • have steps on excessively steep areas.
  • have timber boardwalks and bridges over permanent wet areas and waterways.
  • have seats and maintained views at areas of interest.
  • Walking tracks should be suitable for people with reasonable fitness levels.

The closest toilets are at the Motutara Road car park.
Drinking water:
Drinking water is available at the toilet block at the Motutara Road car park.

Directions:
Starts from Motutara Road approximately 100 metres east from park shop. Track climbs steep stairway to Domain Crescent, then recommences 150 metres further up road and climbs to spectacular lookout (20 minutes). From lookout, track continues through coastal forest to Edwin Mitchelson Track.

Theft from vehicles is not common but unfortunately can happen. You should take the same reasonable precautions you take when parking at other locations and remember to lock your vehicle and take your valuables with you.

How to get to Muriwai

Follow State Highway 16 to Waimauku. Turn left into Muriwai Rd and continue to the park.
