Park Walk
Walking track

Explore the park in a loop walk that takes in many highlights - mature coastal forest, the scenic Cascades Stream and stunning views over the park and back to mainland Auckland. From the main carpark take the Nïkau Track to join the Tarata Track. Turn right on this track and enjoy the walk to the small but beautiful waterfalls. From here, return back along the Tarata Track with its spectacular views over the park and the Hauraki Gulf to the mainland, and return to the carpark via the Köwhai Track.

What to expect:

Walking tracks will:

  • have easy to moderate grades with drained surfaces, generally consisting of a compacted and drained surfaces.
  • be well sign-posted with directional signs at track entrances and junctions and have safety signs where required.

Walking tracks may:

  • have steps on excessively steep areas.
  • have timber boardwalks and bridges over permanent wet areas and waterways.
  • have seats and maintained views at areas of interest.
  • Walking tracks should be suitable for people with reasonable fitness levels.

Theft from vehicles is not common but unfortunately can happen. You should take the same reasonable precautions you take when parking at other locations and remember to lock your vehicle and take your valuables with you.

How to get to Whakanewha

Take the Fullers ferry from Central Auckland or take your car with the Sealink car ferry from Half Moon Bay to Waiheke Island. If you have caught the Fullers ferry then from the ferry terminal at Matiatia catch a shuttle bus to the park or catch the Rocky Bay bus and get off at the Rocky Bay terminal. From the Rocky Bay bus stop, walk up Omiha Rd to Upland Rd track and into the park.
