Kura Track
Tramping track

You can start the Kura Track from Whatipu and walk uphill to the road or start at Whatipu road and walk down to Whatipu. There is a place to park your car at either end. From Whatipu, the track starts before you get to Whatipu Lodge. You'll see a stile and signs. The track begins by crossing farmland before entering the bush. The track then meanders through the bush alongside Whatipu stream which you will cross four times in quick succession, so be prepared to get your feet wet. The track then continues uphill through the bush to meet Puriri Ridge Track. From there you can either walk out to Whatipu road (5 mins) or continue along Puriri Ridge Track. If you want to get back to Whatipu you can either walk back down the Kura Track or walk out to Whatipu road and begin the Omanawanui Track which begins directly opposite the road. This is a popular day trip for many trampers. Though the direction you do the circuit is up to you, on a hot summer day it can be nice to take the Omanawanui Track up and use the more shaded Kura Track as a way to keep cool on the afternoon return to your car. If you start Kura Track from the top at Whatipu road, you need to take the Puriri Ridge Track for 5 mins to get to the Kura Track (not signposted from the road).
