Omanawanui Track
Tramping track

Omanawanui Track is regarded by many as one of the secret jewels in the treasure trove of tracks in the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park. Despite a few sections of steep going the track rewards walkers with its sparkling water views out over the Manukau Bar and its mixed canopy forest. Many walkers combine the track with the Kura Track to create perfect day trip from the Whatipu car park. Though the direction you do the circuit is up to you, on a hot summer day it can be nice to use the more shaded Kura Track as a way to keep cool on the afternoon return to your car. Just remember to allow time to stop and breathe in the fresh coastal and bush air.

What to expect:

Tramping tracks will:

  • consist of formed and drained surfaces.
  • be signposted at track entrances and key junctions.

Tramping tracks may:

  • have structures in permanent wet areas but waterways will not generally be bridged.

Tramping tracks may also have limited track information, and steep grades.

Suitable for people of reasonable fitness and experience.

Directions:
From Whatipu Road opposite Puriri Ridge Track, track follows gentle undulating ridge before descending gradually to meet road again (15 minutes). Track re-enters bush nearby and continues along ridge with steep sections (caution required); rewarding views of Manukau Harbour entrance, Awhitu Peninsula and Whatipu.
