Artist in residence

2010 artist - Maureen Lander

Project 1: Hakari on Henry’s Hill

Maureen Lander’s residency proposal included researching and development of work related to Henry Atkinson, a gifter of land, now part of the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park. She is working towards an interactive art-related event, Hakari on Henrys Hill, with Lopdell House staff, ARC park staff and local school children at the summit of Mt Atkinson (formerly known as Henrys Hill, or Titirangi to local iwi).

Project 2: Paturoa pieces

Inspiration for some work has come from the residency house, Paturoa, and by her ongoing explorations of her immediate surroundings in South Titirangi Rd – especially the nearby Mahoe track which runs down to the Paturoa stream and Titirangi Beach.

  • Paturoa Mantel-piece: Maureen is crafting a decorative strip for the ‘mantel-piece’ for the fireplace using furnishing fabric remnants from the house donated by the family (the Russell/De Courcy s who originally owned the house) and skeletal mahoe leaves. Mahoe was one of the main species traditionally used for fire-making by early Maori.
  • Patterns of Paturoa: During the last week or so Maureen’s habit of taking her camera for a walk has sparked a related project involving a series of small photographs comparing patterns of leaves and light reflected in ripples of the Paturoa stream with patterns of light seen through the old ripple glass window panes of the house.

Project 3:  Tu-Maro

(title to be confirmed)

While in residence Maureen has been gathering local plant weaving materials for a large fibre installation to be suspended from a high ceiling at the Arataki Visitor Centre. This work will reference local Maori legends as well as plant materials from the environment that were customarily used for a range of woven, plaited  and braided taonga by early inhabitants of the Waitakere Ranges (based on remnants of cloaks, belts, kete, fishing nets, lines  and cordage recovered from Waitakere Ranges  and now housed in Auckland Museum). Visit Arataki to see this work from Dec 2010.
