The workroom
There's a lot happening behind the scenes at the ARC.
With the region's population expected to reach 2 million as early as 2035, the ARC's challenge is to sustainably cater for this growth socially and economically while also retaining that which makes Auckland special - its environment and culture.
Two documents manage growth in the region; the Auckland Regional Policy Statement (ARPS) and the Regional Land Transport Strategy (RLTS).
Here in the ARC Workroom you can find more information on the suite of work that is underway to review the existing Regional Policy Statement and develop a new Regional Land Transport Strategy.
These plans are fundamental to the future of the region, so work on them continues while changes are made to local government structures in Auckland region.
Projects in the ARC workroom
The Auckland Regional Policy Statement
The Auckland Regional Policy Statement is being reviewed.
This document sets the direction for population growth and associated urban development in the Auckland region whilst managing the use and protection of the region's natural and physical resources. It includes issues like how we plan for coastal development, manage and protect our freshwater systems and protect our ecosystems so they exist in the future.

We are currently preparing a draft of the Auckland Regional Policy Statement. We will be inviting your comment on this when it is released later in the year.
Regional Land Transport Strategy
A new Regional Land Transport Strategy is being developed.
This document sets the direction for the development of the region's transport system. The current strategy covers the 10 years to 2016, the next one will extend to 30 years and beyond. It will consider regionally significant projects, possible impacts of rising fuel prices, and how transport and land-use decisions can be aligned to manage population growth, as well as the economy and quality of life Aucklanders want to have.

Climate change and energy
The Regional Response to Climate Change and a Regional Energy Strategy are being developed.
These documents will propose actions that may result in changes to the Auckland Regional Policy Statement, Regional Land Transport Strategy, Regional or District Plans, amongst other things.
Climate change and energy are the biggest environmental sustainability issues facing the region. The Regional Response to Climate Change and the Regional Energy Strategy will define how we intend to reach the goals that have been set regionally in the Auckland Sustainability Framework and nationally through the Kyoto Protocol.

Issues and options papers will be released later this year.

A State of the Environment Report for the Auckland region is being compiled.
This report makes publicly available the ARC's environmental monitoring data showing both the conditions and emerging trends in the region. It describes the forces and pressures influencing environmental change, the implication of trends and the effectiveness of current management responses.
